In principle, you will be dialyzed three times a week. However, the duration and frequency of sessions are determined by the nephrologist according to your specific needs..
In most cases, the patient is driven to the hemodialysis center, either by taxi, ambulance or light sanitary vehicle. If more convenient, you may also come with your own vehicle.
Once arrived at the center, a locker room is available for you to change.
In the dialysis room, you will be weighed in order to calculate the weight that you should lose so as to reach the so-called dry weight level. Indeed one puts on weight between dialysis sessions as a result of liquids stored during meals. You will also need to wash the upper limb used for vascular access in order to reduce the risk of infection during drainage. Finally, your blood pressure will be measured, using the unused arm.
After the asepsis, the fistula or the prosthesis is being punctured in two areas. In the event a catheter is used, it is directly connected to the tubing.
The blood is carried away by the generator’s pump into the dialyzer. At the end of the session, your blood is given back to you; the needles are removed or the catheter is disconnected from the tubing.
During the dialysis session, you will be installed on a bed or in an armchair and you will have the possibility to read, watch the TV, listen to music, eat and sleep. At the end of the session, your blood pressure and weight will once again be measured.
Finally, you are driven back to your home.
A personalized follow-up of dialyzed patients requires more than medical equipment and techniques. One important issue is the patient’s ability to lead a normal life by maintaining social ties, obtaining a job, building personal projects and also by means of a healthy lifestyle.
In order to address this issue, a multidisciplinary team gathering nephrologists, psychologists and dieticians are available to answer all questions and give general advice. For any further information, please contact the medical secretary’s office
